Chapter Eight

Everyone is up bright and early. Too early if you ask me. I barely slept last night. Between Liam’s unusual coldness and my fear of having a nightmare in front of him, it’s a wonder I slept at all.

Molly is buzzing with excitement. Breakfast is a giant fruit platter that I’m sure took her hours to cut and arrange. She waits until everyone has had coffee and food before announcing that she booked a trail ride on horses. For everyone. The only horse I’ve ever ridden was plastic and attached to a long metal pole. I look to Liam, hoping that maybe he’ll somehow talk our way out of this.

Not a chance. He looks a little excited about the outing himself. Everyone does, in fact. It’s going to be an interesting day, to say the least.

The car ride over is strained. We have to take two cars, so Liam drives one with me and his parents, while Declan drives the other with Rachel and Conor.

Molly and Pat keep most of the conversation flowing, thankfully. If they notice the silence between Liam and I, they don’t mention it. Liam has barely looked at me today, let alone spoken to me.

I have the whole car ride to get increasingly annoyed by the fact that he’s giving me the cold shoulder. All I did was ask a question. If the topic was off limits he could have just said so. Who am I to judge the need for privacy?

It seems that I’m the only one who’s never been on a horse. After checking in, five horses are brought to us, already saddled up. Suddenly, I’m confronted with the physical proof of how big these animals really are, and my stomach plummets.

An older man wearing all the quintessential cowboy gear, boots and hat included, brings a reddish-colored horse to stop in front of me.

He gives me a crash course in saddle components and how to use my body language to communicate with my horse. Then he gestures for me to mount, telling me that Maple is the most docile, well-trained horse they have. According to him, even a baby could ride her.

Someone has brought over a step stool to assist me, and I somehow manage to climb up onto the saddle without completely embarrassing myself. Now, all I must do is ride around the corral a few times so they can make sure I’m in no danger of falling off on the trail.

Liam and his family are already mounted and waiting patiently for me to finish my quick lesson. Every once in a while, I hear one of them call out encouragement as I make my loops.

It's not as bad as I’m expecting. Once I relax into the rhythm of the horse, I decide I’m actually enjoying myself.

Once I’ve been deemed fit to ride, we’re all given a speech about not veering off the marked trail then we’re allowed to set out.

Maple knows exactly what she’s doing. Before I can give her the signal to start forward, she has already fallen into line behind the other horses.
